Trees were floating down the main shopping street in Cockermouth. More than 1,000 homes were without electricity. John Carlin from Cockermouth said, “It is desperate. The town centers is completely flooded. The only people out there at the moment are the emergency services. “I have lived here for 15 years and have never seen anything like it.”

Several rivers have burst their banks to come in Cumbria, 19-20 November 2009. The environment agency and emergency services have been in action after more rain hit already saturated ground in Cumbria. Thousands people evacuated across Cumbria as floods hit. Police said more than 100 people sought shelter at rescue centre set up in Keswick and Cockermouth.

Reports say more than twelve inches of rain have fallen in parts of Cumbria over night (November 19). If it’s correct, would be the highest ever recorded in Cumbria. Flooding also has caused the closure of 21 schools in Cumbria.
